India and its policies are more than just guidelines; they are the outcome of meticulous pre-planning, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of the global dynamic. These policies reflect countries’ aspirations, values, and roles on the world stage. In recent global politics, India’s foreign policies have played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s relationships, economic growth, and geopolitical influence.

Indeed, Indian foreign policies have increasingly focused on Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (contributing to global peace and prosperity) beyond just national interests. India’s proactive role in global platforms like the G20 and its efforts to engage with diverse regions, such as Africa and South Asia, underscores its commitment to fostering a more stable and inclusive world order.

India and its role in the G20: Championing Inclusivity and Global South Interests

As an emerging player, India’s presidency of the G20 in 2023 marked a significant milestone in its diplomatic history. It was a prodigious step for the Indian era in the global arena. “India’s leadership in the G20 is a testament to our growing stature on the global stage and our commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable growth for all nations“, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As one of the world’s largest economies and a key player in global affairs, India used this platform to advocate for the interests of the Global South. While we could see the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 under Modi’s leadership.

India has always been a voice for the Global South, and on platforms like the G20, we are committed to advocating for the interests of developing nations, ensuring that their concerns are heard and addressed in global decision-making.
— S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister

This move was a testament to India’s commitment to making global governance more inclusive, ensuring that the voices of emerging economies and developing nations are heard in decision-making processes that affect the entire world.

Uprising of Indian Foreign Policy

Historically, India’s foreign policy has changed from 1947 to 2024. Initially, it was started by a long vision of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (Nehruvian Ideology), who laid the foundation of India’s non-alignment policy. His strategic mindset resulted in the NAM, a group of newly independent/decolonized countries; this approach allowed India to navigate through a bipolar world without compromising its principles.
