|| The Globalic- SAMARTH SINGH || South Korea has alleged that North Korea is assisting Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine. The conflict which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, shows no signs of ending and since its start in 2022, the war has heightened global tensions and disrupted international trade. Allies on both sides frequently accuse each other of providing unlawful support to their adversaries, and now, North Korea has been blamed for the same.
More than 1500 soldiers fighting in Russia: South Korea
According to Reuters, South Korean spy agency, National Intelligence Service (NIS) has claimed that North Korea has dispatched more than 1500 trained troops to Russia, and after training they will be deployed on the battlefield. This is not the first time that North Korea has been accused of helping Russia, previously several reports claimed that more than 1300 containers of anti-tank rockets, ballistic missiles, artillery rounds, and other ammunition were shipped on the orders of Kim Jong Un.
According to the NIS, North Korean troops are expected to be issued fake IDs and integrated into the Russian army’s Pacific fleet. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed concern, noting that participants in recent discussions agreed that the strengthening of ties between Russia and North Korea, which now includes the deployment of troops in addition to military supplies, poses a serious security risk not only to South Korea but to the broader international community.
Ukraine states that further involvement of other countries in this conflict could start the third world war
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that his government had received intelligence suggesting that 10,000 North Korean soldiers were being readied to support Russian forces in the war against Ukraine. He cautioned, “The participation of a third country could escalate this conflict into a world war.” However, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Chief Mark Rutte has claimed that there is no solid evidence to support this statement. It will be important to see what new phase comes in the war.
